Distance learning is an exceptionally effective
and flexible means to further your education and career. In
our daily lives, there is little time to travel and attend classes
at an actual, physical school. As a result, many of us lose
the ability to further our education and career opportunities.

At The PLC, we believe that everyone who has
the desire to pursue a career as a paralegal should have that
opportunity. By removing the traditional obstacles to education,
we make the paralegal career opportunity attainable.
Background
“Distance learning” is among the fastest growing
education delivery systems. By using the Internet, you can
attend our discussion groups in “real time,” or
you can review previous classes and discussions, take exams
and earn your Paralegal Certificate from The PLC when it is
most convenient for you.
Asynchronous Learning
The instructors at The PLC recognize that not everyone can
attend every class. Between work, other courses and other
obligations, time for career training is often compromised.
That is why we archive each discussion -- so that those students
who miss a given discussion can review every question and
comment at a time that is more convenient. We encourage our
students to attend all discussions live, but you can still
receive top-notch training through the review of archived
discussions, supplemented by emails and chats with the instructors
and classmates.
Synchronous Learning
At The PLC, weekly discussions are offered so that students
and instructors can discuss various issues in real-time, just
as they would in a regular meeting room. In this online meeting,
you will be able to chat with individuals of your choosing
without the knowledge of the instructor or the group in general.
This ability to “pass notes” is an highly-effective
way to make sure you feel free to ask questions and fully
understand a concept without having to enter the flow of the
general discussion.
Again, attendance and participation is encouraged
but not required.
In summary, through The PLC’s online learning
system, you can:
• attend and participate in a “live”
or “synchronous” discussions
• review 100% of the past discussions through our “asynchronous”
archived delivery system
• pickup assignments
• send and receive emails with your instructor and classmates
• take your examinations
• receive your grades
Textbooks
Once you register, you will receive textbooks
for the courses of study. All textbooks chosen for The PLC
courses are from West / Thomson Learning – the nation’s
leading legal publisher. These are among the most highly regarded
texts available and are used in college other professional
training courses.
The PLC courses are designed specifically for
each text – that means that you receive a comprehensive,
well-paced series of lessons designed for you. You will be
able to keep the assigned textbooks, as they will be useful
references throughout your career.
The cost of the textbooks is included in the
Tuition
costs.
Course of Study
Each month long course is dedicated to
one topic. You will receive a separate textbook for each course.
You will be responsible for the assigned reading materials,
and you will be required to take a test at the end of each
lesson.
Students can contact the instructor during the
live discussions and directly through email. You are also
encouraged to meet and work with the other students. You can
contact each other through the various chatrooms on The PLC
site, via email, or you can create your own website through
The PLC site tools and visit each others’ sites directly.
Grading
Examinations will be given at the end of each of the eight
courses in the Certificate Program. Successful completion
of each of the eight courses in the Certificate Program is
required for graduation.
Letter grades will be assigned to each examination.
Participation in online discussions is not required, and lack
of participation in these discussions will not negatively
affect your grade. However, your participation in online discussions
may positively impact your grades.
In the event that a student does not successfully
pass an examination on his/her first attempt, the instructor
will arrange a make-up exam or other work in order for the
student to successfully pass the given course.
Once you have successfully completed your coursework,
you can choose between a letter grade transcript and a "pass-fail"
transcript to demonstrate your successful completion of The
PLC Certificate Program to potential employers.
